Mobile Developer interview questions and sample answers

A mobile developer interview usually mixes two kinds of question: ones that test whether you know the job, and behavioral ones that ask for proof from your past. Below are 10 of the first with a short model answer, and 5 of the second with what the interviewer is really checking. Rewrite every answer in your own words and with your own numbers.

Job-specific questions

1. How do you handle differences in UI behavior between iOS and Android?

I use platform-specific design guidelines, Human Interface Guidelines for iOS and Material Design for Android, and test on real devices for each rather than assuming a shared codebase looks identical everywhere.

2. How do you optimize app performance for low-end devices?

I profile with tools like Android Studio's profiler or Xcode Instruments, reduce memory usage by lazy-loading images, and minimize main thread work to avoid jank on lower-spec hardware.

3. How do you handle app state persistence across sessions?

I use local storage appropriate to the platform, like Room or Core Data, for structured data, and make sure sensitive data goes into secure storage like Keychain, not plain text.

4. What's your approach to handling network failures gracefully?

I implement retry logic with exponential backoff, cache the last known good state so the app doesn't show a blank screen, and give the user a clear error message with a retry option.

5. How do you manage app releases and versioning?

I follow semantic versioning, use staged rollouts through the Play Store and TestFlight to catch crashes on a small percentage of users first, and monitor crash reports before full rollout.

6. How do you handle battery and background processing constraints?

I use platform-appropriate background task APIs like WorkManager on Android or BGTaskScheduler on iOS, and avoid polling in favor of push notifications where possible to save battery.

7. How do you debug a crash that only happens in production?

I check crash reporting tools like Firebase Crashlytics for stack traces, reproduce using the same OS version and device model if possible, and add granular logging before the next release if I can't pin it down.

8. What's your approach to handling different screen sizes and orientations?

I use responsive layout systems, ConstraintLayout on Android or Auto Layout on iOS, avoid hardcoded dimensions, and test on both a small phone and a tablet to catch layout breaks.

9. How do you approach app store review rejections?

I read the specific guideline cited carefully, fix the actual issue rather than trying to reword around it, and resubmit with a clear note explaining the change if it wasn't obvious.

10. How do you manage push notification implementation?

I use platform services like Firebase Cloud Messaging for Android and APNs for iOS, handle permission requests contextually rather than on first launch, and test delivery across foreground, background, and killed app states.

Behavioral questions

Answer these with STAR: the Situation in one sentence, the Task, the Action you took (most of the answer), the Result with a number.

11. Tell me about a result you are proud of.

What they are checking: A specific outcome with a number, and what you personally did to get it.

A result to build the answer around: Shipped 3 iOS and Android apps with over 2 million downloads.

12. Describe a time you improved how something was done.

What they are checking: That you notice waste and fix it without being told, then measure the difference.

A result to build the answer around: Raised crash-free sessions from 97% to 99.8%.

13. Tell me about a time you had to deliver under pressure.

What they are checking: How you prioritise, communicate early and still finish to standard.

A result to build the answer around: Cut app start time by 45% through lazy loading and image caching.

14. Give an example of working with a difficult colleague or customer.

What they are checking: Calm, the other person's view stated fairly, and a result that helped both sides.

A result to build the answer around: Kept a 4.7 App Store rating across 30,000 reviews.

15. What is something you learned from a mistake?

What they are checking: Ownership without excuses, and the habit you changed so it did not happen again.

A result to build the answer around: Set up automated release pipelines, shipping every 2 weeks instead of every 2 months.

Before the interview

Interviewers read your resume just before they walk in, and most questions come from it. Every bullet on it should be one you can expand into a two-minute STAR story. Check that it matches the posting with the free ATS Match Score, and look at the mobile developer resume keywords the ad is likely to use.
