Paralegal interview questions and sample answers

A paralegal interview usually mixes two kinds of question: ones that test whether you know the job, and behavioral ones that ask for proof from your past. Below are 10 of the first with a short model answer, and 5 of the second with what the interviewer is really checking. Rewrite every answer in your own words and with your own numbers.

Job-specific questions

1. How do you organize documents for a large discovery production?

I use a document management system like Relativity, Bates-stamp everything, and tag by relevance and privilege before production. On a case with 40,000 documents, I built a coding protocol with the attorney upfront so review stayed consistent.

2. How do you calendar litigation deadlines?

I calculate deadlines using the court's local rules, usually counting backward from a trial date, and enter them in a docketing system with reminders at 30, 14, and 3 days out. I double-check computations against the rule text.

3. How do you handle privileged documents during document review?

I flag anything involving attorney-client communication or work product, log it on a privilege log with author, date, and basis for withholding, and route questionable calls to the supervising attorney rather than guessing.

4. Describe your process for preparing a witness for deposition.

I compile relevant exhibits, prior statements, and key dates into a binder, then run through likely questions with the attorney beforehand. I make sure the witness has reviewed their own prior testimony so there are no contradictions.

5. How do you cite-check a legal brief?

I verify every citation against Westlaw or Lexis for accuracy and current validity, checking that no case has been overruled using Shepard's or KeyCite. I flag any pincite that doesn't match the quoted language exactly.

6. How do you handle a conflict check when a new client comes in?

I run the client and related parties through our conflicts database, checking against current and former clients and adverse parties, then report results to the assigning attorney before any work begins, even for a rush intake.

7. How do you manage a high volume of client files simultaneously?

I use a case management system like Clio to track deadlines and status across all files, and do a Friday review of anything due the following week. This keeps me from relying on memory alone.

8. What's your experience with e-filing court documents?

I've e-filed in both state and federal courts, checking local formatting rules like page limits and required certificates of service before submission. I always file a few hours before the deadline in case the system rejects it.

9. How do you support an attorney during trial prep?

I organize trial exhibits in binders and digitally, prepare witness and exhibit lists, and coordinate logistics like subpoenas. During a jury trial last year I managed real-time exhibit retrieval so the attorney never had to pause.

10. How do you handle a situation where you spot a possible error in a filed document?

I flag it immediately to the supervising attorney with the specific page and issue rather than fixing it myself, since corrections to filed documents often require a formal motion. Speed matters more than convenience.

Before the interview
