Pharmacy Technician interview questions and sample answers
A pharmacy technician interview usually mixes two kinds of question: ones that test whether you know the job, and behavioral ones that ask for proof from your past. Below are 10 of the first with a short model answer, and 5 of the second with what the interviewer is really checking. Rewrite every answer in your own words and with your own numbers.
Job-specific questions
1. Walk me through the steps of filling a prescription accurately.
I verify the prescription details against the patient profile, check for allergies and drug interactions the pharmacist should review, count or measure the medication, and label it correctly before it goes to the pharmacist for final verification. I never skip the pharmacist check even when I'm confident it's right.
2. How do you handle a prescription that looks like it might be forged or altered?
I flag it to the pharmacist immediately rather than fill it, noting anything specific like odd handwriting or a quantity that doesn't match typical dosing. We follow our store's protocol which may include calling the prescriber's office to verify before doing anything further.
3. What's your process for managing insurance rejections at the counter?
I check the rejection code first, common ones like prior authorization needed or refill too soon, and address it directly, like contacting the prescriber for a PA or checking if a different day supply resolves it. I explain clearly to the patient what's happening and roughly how long it'll take rather than leaving them confused at the counter.
4. How do you handle inventory management to avoid running out of high-demand medications?
I monitor par levels for commonly prescribed drugs and controlled substances, and place orders before hitting the minimum threshold, factoring in things like flu season demand spikes. I also rotate stock so older lots get used first based on expiration dates.
5. Describe how you handle a controlled substance count discrepancy.
I recount immediately to rule out a counting error, then report the discrepancy to the pharmacist in charge right away since DEA regulations require prompt documentation. I never try to quietly reconcile it myself without pharmacist and management involvement.
6. How do you communicate with a patient who's upset about a delay in their prescription?
I acknowledge the wait, explain the specific reason if I can, like waiting on insurance authorization, and give a realistic time estimate rather than a vague one. Being direct about what's actually happening reduces frustration more than a generic apology.
7. What steps do you take to prevent medication errors during a busy shift?
I never skip the barcode scanning step even when rushed, and I double check look-alike sound-alike drug names, like hydroxyzine and hydralazine, especially during high-volume periods. Slowing down for that one extra check takes seconds but prevents a serious error.
8. How do you handle compounding a non-sterile medication?
I follow the exact formula and technique from USP 795 guidelines, use calibrated equipment for measuring, and document lot numbers and beyond-use dates on the label. I have the pharmacist verify the final product before it's dispensed.
9. What would you do if a patient asked you a clinical question, like whether they can take a medication with food?
I answer basic labeling information I'm confident about, like directions already on the bottle, but I refer clinical judgment questions, like drug interactions or side effect management, to the pharmacist. Technicians aren't licensed to give clinical advice, and I'm clear about that boundary with patients.
10. How do you stay organized when managing multiple tasks, like filling prescriptions, answering phones, and handling the drive-through at once?
I prioritize based on urgency, like a patient waiting for an antibiotic before a non-urgent refill, and I communicate wait times honestly rather than letting people wonder. I also lean on teamwork, calling a coworker over if the queue backs up rather than trying to power through alone and risk an error.
