Sales Representative interview questions and sample answers

A sales representative interview usually mixes two kinds of question: ones that test whether you know the job, and behavioral ones that ask for proof from your past. Below are 10 of the first with a short model answer, and 5 of the second with what the interviewer is really checking. Rewrite every answer in your own words and with your own numbers.

Job-specific questions

1. Walk me through how you qualify a lead before investing time in it.

I use BANT, budget, authority, need, and timeline. I ask direct questions early, like who else is involved in the decision and what's driving the timeline, so I don't spend three calls with someone who can't actually sign off.

2. How do you handle a prospect who says your price is too high?

I don't drop price first. I ask what they're comparing it to and re-anchor on value, like the ROI or time saved, with a specific number from a similar customer. If budget is the real blocker, I offer a smaller starter package.

3. Describe your process for following up after a demo that went well but stalled.

I send a recap email within 24 hours with the specific pain points we discussed and next steps, then follow up every 4 to 5 business days with new value, like a relevant case study, rather than just checking in.

4. How do you handle a customer who wants to cancel their contract?

I ask what changed since they signed, since it's often a usage or support gap I can fix. If it's a real mismatch I don't push, but I always offer a call with a specialist before processing the cancellation.

5. What CRM habits do you keep to manage your pipeline?

I log every call and email the same day, tag deals by stage and next action date, and review my pipeline every Monday to flag anything that's gone quiet for more than two weeks so it doesn't silently die.

6. Tell me about losing a deal you thought you'd win, and what you learned.

I lost a deal to a competitor because I hadn't identified the economic buyer, only the champion. I now confirm the full buying committee by the second call, and ask directly who signs the check before investing more time.

7. How do you handle a prospect who goes silent mid-negotiation?

I send one direct message asking if priorities shifted, since guessing wastes time. If there's no response after two attempts over two weeks, I move the deal to a nurture sequence and check back in a quarter.

8. How do you approach upselling an existing customer?

I review their usage data first to find a natural expansion point, like a team that's hit its seat limit, and time the conversation around a renewal or a clear win they've had, not just a quota deadline on my end.

9. What is your process for handling objections during a cold call?

I acknowledge the objection instead of arguing, like that makes sense, a lot of people say that at first, then ask a clarifying question to find the real concern underneath before pitching. Usually the stated objection isn't the real one.

10. How do you set and track your personal sales targets?

I break my quarterly quota into weekly activity targets, like 20 calls and 5 demos a week, since activity is what I control. I track conversion rate at each stage so I know whether to fix volume or messaging.

Before the interview

Interviewers read your resume just before they walk in, and most questions come from it. Every bullet on it should be one you can expand into a two-minute STAR story.
