Auto Mechanic interview questions and sample answers

A auto mechanic interview usually mixes two kinds of question: ones that test whether you know the job, and behavioral ones that ask for proof from your past. Below are 10 of the first with a short model answer, and 5 of the second with what the interviewer is really checking. Rewrite every answer in your own words and with your own numbers.

Job-specific questions

1. A customer's check engine light is on with no obvious symptoms. What's your first step?

I pull codes with a scan tool, but I don't replace parts off the code alone. I verify with live data and a visual inspection since a code like P0420 can point to several root causes.

2. How do you diagnose a car that cranks but won't start?

I check for spark, fuel pressure, and compression in that order. If I get spark and fuel but no start, I check timing components next, since a jumped timing belt can bend valves on interference engines.

3. What's your process for a brake job?

I inspect rotor thickness against the minimum spec stamped on the rotor, check caliper slide pins for seizing, and always bed in new pads with a proper break-in procedure before releasing the car.

4. How do you handle a customer who wants to skip a recommended repair?

I explain the safety and cost risk clearly, document it as declined on the work order, and never pressure them, but I flag anything that's a genuine safety issue like worn brake lines.

5. How do you diagnose an intermittent electrical issue?

I check grounds and connectors first since that's the most common cause, use a wiring diagram to isolate the circuit, and sometimes wiggle test connectors while monitoring with a multimeter to catch the fault live.

6. What's your approach to a transmission that shifts hard?

I check fluid level and condition first since burnt fluid often explains it, then pull codes for shift solenoid faults, and road test to feel whether it's mechanical or electronic before tearing anything down.

7. How do you torque lug nuts correctly?

I always use a torque wrench in a star pattern to the manufacturer's spec, typically 80-100 ft-lbs on most passenger vehicles, never an impact gun alone, to avoid warped rotors or stretched studs.

8. How do you diagnose a coolant leak with no visible puddle?

I pressure test the cooling system with a hand pump tester, check for a blown head gasket with a chemical block test if I suspect combustion gas in the coolant, and inspect the reservoir for bubbling.

9. What's your process for a pre-purchase inspection?

I check fluid levels and condition, scan for stored codes, inspect tires for uneven wear indicating alignment issues, check for frame damage or overspray, and road test for noises and shifting quality.

10. How do you keep up with new vehicle technology?

I do manufacturer training modules and ASE recertification, and I invest in updated scan tool software since hybrid and EV systems need different diagnostic approaches than traditional combustion vehicles.

Behavioral questions

Answer these with STAR: the Situation in one sentence, the Task, the Action you took (most of the answer), the Result with a number.

11. Tell me about a result you are proud of.

What they are checking: A specific outcome with a number, and what you personally did to get it.

A result to build the answer around: Bill 30+ flat-rate hours a week, the highest efficiency on a team of 12.

12. Describe a time you improved how something was done.

What they are checking: That you notice waste and fix it without being told, then measure the difference.

A result to build the answer around: Keep a 96% comeback-free rate across 1,500+ repair orders a year.

13. Tell me about a time you had to deliver under pressure.

What they are checking: How you prioritise, communicate early and still finish to standard.

A result to build the answer around: Diagnose complex electrical faults, cutting average diagnostic time by 35%.

14. Give an example of working with a difficult colleague or customer.

What they are checking: Calm, the other person's view stated fairly, and a result that helped both sides.

A result to build the answer around: Trained on hybrid systems and now handle all hybrid repairs in the shop.

15. What is something you learned from a mistake?

What they are checking: Ownership without excuses, and the habit you changed so it did not happen again.

A result to build the answer around: Mentored 2 apprentices to their first ASE certifications.

Before the interview

Interviewers read your resume just before they walk in, and most questions come from it. Every bullet on it should be one you can expand into a two-minute STAR story.
