Alt text examples › Real estate photos
Property photos are the listing. Buyers using screen readers, and search engines indexing listings, need the room, its standout features and what is visible from it. Good real estate alt text uses the same vocabulary as the description (square footage belongs in text, not alt), and never repeats "beautiful" or "stunning".
| # | The image | Bad alt | Good alt | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Front exterior of a two-storey house | house | Two-storey brick house with a covered front porch and a double garage | Building type, material and features buyers look for. |
| 2 | Kitchen photo | stunning gourmet kitchen! | Kitchen with white shaker cabinets, quartz counters and a center island with three stools | Facts beat adjectives. A listener cannot see "stunning". |
| 3 | Master bedroom with bay window | bedroom 1 | Primary bedroom with a bay window overlooking the garden and a walk-in closet | Name the room and its features. |
| 4 | Floor plan of a 3-bed apartment | floorplan.jpg | Floor plan: 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, open kitchen and living room; room sizes listed below | Short alt plus room sizes in text. |
| 5 | View from the balcony toward the sea | view | Balcony view over rooftops to the sea | The view is a selling point; say what you can see. |
| 6 | Bathroom photo | bath | Bathroom with a walk-in shower, double vanity and heated towel rail | Same pattern: fixtures a buyer compares. |
| 7 | Aerial drone photo showing the plot boundaries | aerial | Aerial view of the 0.5-acre plot with the boundary outlined, backing onto woodland | Aerial shots explain the land: size, shape, neighbours. |
| 8 | Photo 14 of 30: the same living room from another angle | living room | Living room from the fireplace end, looking toward the French doors to the patio | Gallery photos should differ by what each angle shows. |
WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content (Level A). Floor plans are complex images: give a short alt and list the rooms and dimensions as text. The full requirement is explained in our guide to WCAG 1.1.1 alt text requirements.
