What it shows

The chance of seeing an aurora, about half an hour ahead, on a 1-degree grid covering the planet. For the centre of the map it also works out whether the sky is dark enough there: visible now, lit but the sky is too bright, or nothing.

Where the data comes from

NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center OVATION aurora model; published every 5 minutes and refreshed by the layer every 5 minutes.

Reading the map

Translucent green for a faint chance, through bright green and yellow to pink at 40% and above.
