What it shows

Every bird-flu outbreak that a national veterinary service has notified to WOAH, the world animal health organisation: poultry farms and wild-bird finds, H5N1 and its cousins, on every continent, newest first. Pick a place, or search one, and it gets a proximity score from 0 to 100 from the outbreaks within 300 km in the last year, each weighted by how near and how recent it was.

Where the data comes from

WOAH World Animal Health Information System (WAHIS), immediate notifications of avian influenza events, refreshed every 6 hours.

Reading the map

Colour is when the outbreak started: red within a month, orange within three, amber within the year, grey older. A filled dot is poultry, a ring is wild birds.

Units Proximity score 0-100 = sum over outbreaks within 300 km and 365 days of (1 - km/300) x (1 - days/365) x 55, capped at 100: our heuristic, not an epidemiological model.
