How to read the cone

The cone is drawn through circles that contain the true centre position about two times out of three, based on the past five years of forecast errors. It widens with time because the forecast gets less certain. It is not the size of the storm: damaging wind, rain and surge often extend hundreds of kilometres outside it.

How this page is made

Built every hour by LayEarth from public feeds: the NOAA National Hurricane Center (CurrentStorms.json, forecast advisories, cone and best-track files) for the Atlantic and the eastern and central Pacific, and GDACS (European Commission JRC and UN OCHA), which relays JTWC and the regional centres, for the other basins, with its estimates of people exposed. Category is computed here from the 1-minute sustained wind; centres that use 10-minute winds (RSMC La Réunion, BoM, Fiji, IMD, JMA) publish lower numbers and their own scales. Kilometres per hour and miles per hour are rounded to 5.
