What it shows

Every glacier basin in the world with a lake that can burst, and how bad the flood below it would be. 1,508 basins scored 1 to 5 for hazard, vulnerability, exposure and overall risk today and under three emission scenarios in 2050 and 2100, with the simulated flood area of each basin drawn on the map when you open it.

Where the data comes from

Simulated potential glacial lake outburst floods and risk classes, Zenodo record 22023707 (CC-BY 4.0, 2026).

Reading the map

Green is very low risk, through yellow and orange to red for very high; grey points are basins with no lake in the chosen scenario. The blue area is the simulated flood of the open basin.

Units Risk class 1-5 per glacier basin (hazard, vulnerability, exposure, overall); scenarios SSP1-2.6, SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5 in 2050 and 2100.
