What it shows

Every methane source that satellites and survey aircraft have caught venting, worldwide: 11,000-plus sites in the Carbon Mapper catalogue, from Permian oil wells to Turkmen pipelines, Chinese coal mines and city landfills. A plume is only a rate at one instant; here each source becomes tonnes a year (rate times how often it was caught venting), CO2-equivalent at 20 years, climate damage in dollars, and the mapped site underneath it. Filter repeat offenders, oil and gas, coal, waste or farms.

Where the data comes from

Carbon Mapper public catalogue (Tanager, EMIT, AVIRIS-NG, GAO); infrastructure from OpenStreetMap contributors; IPCC AR6 GWP; US EPA 2023 social cost of carbon.

Reading the map

Colour is how often the site was caught venting when a sensor looked: pale yellow once, amber sometimes, orange often, red every time. The area of a dot grows with tonnes a year.

Units Tonnes of methane a year = detected rate (kg/h) x persistence (detections / observations) x 8,760 h; CO2e with GWP20 82.5 and GWP100 29.8; damage at $190 per tonne CO2.
