What it shows

Cloud cover as a field, split the way the model splits the sky: total, low (below about 2 km), middle (about 2 to 6 km) and high (above). The readout also gives the cloud base, the height of the lowest cloud ceiling, in metres.

Where the data comes from

NOAA GFS 0.25° global model (public domain), baked on our server every run; total cover on a 0.5° grid and the low, middle, high cover and cloud base on a 1° grid, every 3 hours ahead; values between grid points are interpolated.

Reading the map

Dark blue-grey for a clear sky (0%), through grey as cloud builds, to white for overcast (100%).

Units Percent of the sky covered; cloud base in metres above sea level.
