What it shows

Surface wind as a streaming particle field, so fronts, convergence lines and storms show up as shapes. The model is sampled on a grid across the view and interpolated between points. A readout gives speed and direction at the centre of the map. The origin mode traces the air at any point back 48 hours through the hourly wind, then reads what it carries: live PM2.5 from the civic stations along the last hours of the path against those at the same distance off to the sides, the industry, plants and roads OpenStreetMap places in that corridor, and a check of the delay against the last 24 hours of measurements.

Where the data comes from

NOAA GFS 0.25° global model (public domain), baked on our server every hour into a 1° grid for now and a 2° grid from 24 h ago to 48 h ahead; wind origin at 925 hPa from the same model. Origin mode: Sensor.Community live PM2.5 network, OpenStreetMap via Overpass, and our 10-minute archive of the same network.

Reading the map

Colour follows speed from calm dark blue through teal and green to yellow (gale, about 39 km/h and up), orange, red and purple at 110 km/h and above.

Units Wind speed in km/h.
