What it shows

Every active fire detected from orbit in the last 24 hours. Each detection is a 375 m satellite pixel hot enough to be burning, with its fire radiative power; at low zoom they merge into a heat map. Filters isolate large fires, night passes and high-confidence detections.

Where the data comes from

NASA FIRMS, VIIRS on NOAA-20, global 24-hour file; the server re-downloads it every 15 minutes and the layer refreshes every 5 minutes.

Reading the map

Colour runs from deep orange (about 1 MW) through amber to pale yellow (100 MW and above).

Units Fire radiative power in megawatts (MW).
