What it shows
Live aircraft positions over the view, each one dead-reckoned between updates and coloured by altitude. Select an aircraft to see its callsign, type, speed and route, with the great-circle path drawn on the map. Filters separate airliners, light aircraft, helicopters and military traffic. The contrails mode runs every aircraft above FL280 through the Schmidt-Appleman test: which ones are laying persistent, warming cirrus right now, and which flight level would avoid it.
Where the data comes from
ADS-B from the adsb.lol community receiver network, with the OpenSky Network as a fallback for wide views; routes looked up by callsign from adsbdb. Polled every 8 seconds. Contrails: NOAA GFS temperature and humidity at 300, 250 and 200 hPa.
