Measured weather at airports, from the METAR reports their instruments send. Each airport is coloured by the flight category worked out from ceiling and visibility under the FAA rule. It covers views narrower than about 26 degrees; at continental scale the panel asks you to zoom in.
Where the data comes from
NOAA Aviation Weather Center (aviationweather.gov) METAR data; the server caches it for 4 minutes, and stations usually report once or twice an hour.
Reading the map
VFR (flying by eye), MVFR (marginal), IFR (instruments needed) and LIFR (low instrument conditions, the category that grounds flights), each in its own colour.
Units Flight category; temperature, wind, visibility and ceiling as reported.
