What it shows

Every earthquake of magnitude 2.5 or more recorded worldwide in the last 30 days. Each event is a ring whose radius is the felt radius for its magnitude, and the month can be played back in time. A list ranks events by size or recency, with magnitude filters. Anomalies mode scores the last week of every 2° cell against its own ten-year USGS catalogue and separates swarms (no mainshock) from aftershock sequences.

Where the data comes from

USGS Earthquake Hazards Program, the public 2.5_month GeoJSON summary feed (updated by USGS every minute); fetched when the layer opens.

Reading the map

Colour is depth: shallow (under 35 km, the ones people feel), intermediate (35 to 150 km) and deep (over 150 km). Ring size follows magnitude.

Units Magnitude; depth in kilometres.
